The Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition is one of the last exhibitions in Nova Scotia to have an Open Dairy Show as part of exhibition activities. The show, which traditionally attracts exhibitors from Antigonish, Guysborough and Cape Breton Island, is held on Friday morning. Until recently, it included cow classes but is now an exceptionally strong heifer show. This is thanks, in part, to support from the next generation of exhibition dairy exhibitors – 4-H members. The show is strongly supported by the agriculture community and by local farmers, as they compete for local accolades, while engaging with the public on modern dairy farming practices.
Prizes
Prizes for heifer classes are as follows:
- 1st place – $50.00
- 2nd place – $45.00
- 3rd place – $40.00
- 4th place – $35.00
- 5th place – $30.00
- 6th place – $25.00
- 7th place – $20.00
- 8th place – $15.00
- 9th place – $10.00
- 10th place – $5.00
There is no prize money or points for the champion or special classes.
Rules & Regulations
General Holstein Canada Rules & Regulations
The owner indicated in the Holstein Canada database at the time of animal verification or upon special arrangement with the show officials at the time the animal is exhibited. Purity Animals must have a minimum of 75% purity on their official Holstein registration to be eligible to be exhibited.
Junior Breeder’s Herd – A Junior breeder’s herd is a group of three (3) animals carrying the same prefix. The prefix is the first word of the animal’s name, and it must be exactly the same for each animal. These animals must have been exhibited in their respective classes. The owner of the prefix does not have to own any of the animals in the group.
Bred & Owned Animals whose prefix belongs to the owner (or one of the owners). The exhibitor must solely or jointly own the animal.
Awards – Premier Breeder Presented to the breeding unit (individual, partnership, or institution) having the highest number of points won in individual female classes, with a maximum of 10 animals considered for award calculation. Animals used for the award calculation do not necessarily have to be owned by the winner. Calculation of the Premier Breeder award is determined strictly by the prefix of the animal, which can be identified on the Certificate of Registry.
In keeping with national health, bio-security interests, and breed identification rules, all Canadian dairy animals must be security tagged to show one tag pair in each ear with all four parts identically numbered. All US animals must carry USDA tags.
Dress Code – Exhibitors will wear a white shirt and white pants when leading animals in the ring.
ENSE Rules & Regulations
Exhibitors must have all registration papers available for the Show Committee Wednesday-Friday. Animals must be registered in the name of an exhibitor at the time the papers are checked. If not, a transfer must be completed on site, and the show officials will forward the transfer to Holstein Canada before the animal is shown at the ENSE. All animals must have the required RFID ear tags, as CFIA may be on-site checking tags.
All heifers and displays must remain intact in the Cattle Barn until Sunday at 6 pm. All bedding must be cleaned to the floor to ensure payment of prize money. Please clean the area down to dirt (as upon arrival). Tack, clipping supplies, surplus feed / straw, etc., can be removed before 6 pm, but signage/display curtains, and the pack must remain in place with the cattle until 6 pm.
Each farm is responsible for maintaining a clean display and clean clipping / prep area throughout the week to ensure prize money payment. Remember, your display / cattle are reflecting the dairy industry to the public. A prize will be awarded for the Top Barn Display, if sponsorship is available. Displays are evaluated throughout the week on attractiveness, neatness, cleanliness, and appeal / awareness / education to the general public. It is important that walkways be kept clean and swept, and all manure promptly cleaned up, in light of HPAI biosecurity concerns.
The Show will begin at 9 am on Friday.

The Eastern NS Exhibition, Cattle Committee, and its Directors / Management assume no responsibility or liability on the part of exhibitors / breeders. Exhibitors must carry liability insurance and have proof of liability insurance on site and available to present upon request.
